Parking Restrictions

By Stephanie Bates

Finding a parking spot in general is a hard. For most schools there are designated parking lots for different people for example a teacher parking lot, a senior parking lot, and an underclassmen parking lot. In big schools each student has a ticket like thing in the window and has a designated parking spot. At Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth, Texas each student is given a pass to put in their car windows and is required to go up to a gate and speak into an intercom and has to state their first and last name and if they had left during school must state where they are coming from, then the gate is opened. After this process they then proceed to their designed parking spot. After doing some research I found that a lot of schools have a system like this one or very close to it. At Vocational Region 10 School in Brunswick, Maine they have a first come first serve parking system, but you must have a small sticker in the lower driver side window to park and drive to and from Voc. When leaving the principal is standing outside at the end of the one-way parking lot and monitors the people driving and if they have a little sticker. This system is not nearly as extensive or effective as other but does help.

At Freeport High School there is no parking restrictions except for just saying underclassmen must park in the Gap parking lot. The people who police the underclassmen parking in the senior lot are the seniors, but it becomes difficult to monitor when we don’t have time to just stand there and watch then walk all the way up to the office and report them. If we do find a minute to spare and find an underclassman parking in the senior lot the only discipline they receive is a detention. No one takes this threat seriously.

With Freeport High School being a small school, a gated school area would be a little extreme. I think that you should have to register your car with the school at the beginning of the school year, and the first to register and get the tag to hang in their window will get parking spot one. Then there will not be a big fight over parking spots and no stress to get to school early.
