What is FreeRice.com?
By Sarah Baker & Stephanie Bates
Those of you who have spent anywhere from one minute to one hour clicking away at vocabulary words on FreeRice.com probably know the basics of what this organization is all about. Simply, it is a website designed to expand vocabulary levels while donating rice to hungry people through the United Nations World Food Program. But how is this done, exactly? Read on for an in depth look into the creative food distribution that has proven to be a great success.
FreeRice.com is a sister site of Poverty.com, which is a website that was created for people around the world interested in ending poverty, and created by a private individual by the name of John Breen. There are two main goals associated with FreeRice; the first is to provide English vocabulary for free to everyone who accesses the website, and the second is to provide free rice to starving people in the hopes of ending world hunger.
The non-profit organization has been recognized by many reputable sources and is growing in popularity for it’s charitable work. The Washington Post says, “What if just knowing what a word meant could help feed hungry people around the world? Well, at FreeRice it does . . . the totals have grown exponentially.” As far as the entertainment aspect is concerned, USA Today commented, “Feeling guilty about wasting time on computer solitaire? Join the growing guilt-free multitude at FreeRice.com, an online game with redeeming social value.”
So the next time you have a few free moments in front of a computer, check out FreeRice.com and improve your vocabulary while feeding the hungry.
