Gap Parking Lot vs. Senior Parking Lot

By Charlie Lehmer

Juniors, few sophomores, and maybe that stray freshmen, park in the Gap Parking Lot (GPL) each day. On the other hand those "privileged" seniors, among many other things, park in the special Senior Parking Lot (SPL).

The SPL has been noted as luxurious, and close to the school-unlike the GPL-for many years. It's always been taken for granted that the SPL is "better" than the GPL, but some data taken on the two lots sheds new light on the topic.

If someone was to start from the middle of the SPL and head to the office doors the way they're supposed to and with no cheating (that means not using the back door...) the distance would measure 504 feet. Starting from the middle of the GPL and to the office is only 6 feet longer (510 feet). So yes, the SPL is shorter but six feet is nothing.

However the distance isn't all that should be taken into consideration. The SPL is an uphill hike in order to reach the office while the GPL is downhill. But that is just the opposite at the end of the day. Seniors go down, juniors go up.

Next comes the weather. The GPL is not such a bonus when you have to cross the "wind tunnel" which freezes everyone no matter how big his or her marshmallow sized coat is. But at the same time the seniors can stay inside for the duration of their walk and are protected by the schools warm walls that block out any unwanted weather.

Being inside may be a plus for the SPL but unfortunately the "inside path" stretches 533 feet. This means seniors are protected from harsh weather but it also means they have to walk farther than juniors, sophomores, and freshmen.

Looking at the GPL if a student were to use the shortcut (the science door)-which of course you can't use in the morning-it is only 498 feet(35 feet shorter than SPL) to the GPL. So the GPL is shorter than the SPL but it all comes down to whether you want to have a short dash through wind, or a long walk inside.

While the GPL's science door is always closed in the morning-because teachers can see anyone who opens it... the SPL's backdoor has a chance of being opened because someone is always nearby, and I want to say that TEACHERS ARE ALWAYS WATHCING this door but seniors still seem to slip past... This means that while the GPL is a trip that always consists of harsh conditions in the morning the SPL has a chance of providing protection both in the morning AND the afternoon.

It all comes down to preference and where your destination is. Both parking lots have their pros and cons. This information (FYI, it was measured with a trundle wheel so the information is legit) shows that technically the SPL is better than the GPL but then why would you read this if you didn't think the other was better... anyways it's always good to be reassured that the SPL is really the best option and the seniors really do have their "senior privileges".
